An office printing at five percent coverage on average — which means a page with text only and modest spot colour — will hit the published yield. Offices printing heavier graphics, photographs, or full-bleed marketing collateral run at 8 to 18 percent coverage and hit cartridge end-of-life at a fraction of the published yield. Every consumable carries a published yield in pages. For colour cartridges, the yield is per colour and assumes 5 percent coverage of that colour on the test page. For mono cartridges, the yield assumes 5 percent black coverage.
Some current MFPs report coverage directly through the admin panel. For those that do not, a 90-day print-job sample analysed through the device's reporting tools approximates the figure. Office documents typically run 4 to 7 percent; marketing collateral 9 to 16 percent.
Divide the published yield by the correction factor. A cartridge rated at 30,000 pages at 5 percent produces 18,750 pages at 8 percent coverage, or 12,500 pages at 12 percent coverage. The published number tells one story; the adjusted number tells the office's story.
